Spice Jar Fine Motor Skill Activity

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse…remember that song in elementary school? =)

I love being able to reuse something for an activity or craft for the kids later. I have been collecting these spice jars for a couple years now and finally put it to good use. As you know on the top of some of the jars, there are some large holes in the plastic lid. Some have a lot smaller holes in them, which I was thinking you could use toothpicks if your child won’t poke themselves (you just have to keep an eye on the the whole time with sharper objects).

It’s been great using this craft as my toddler is working on his fine motor skills. You can also bring it with you to restaurants or the store or meetings, to keep your little one occupied for a bit.

Items needed: (all start with ‘S’)  =)

  • Spice Jars (any kind, make sure it’s clear)
  • Straws
  • Scissors
  • String

Instructions:

  1. After you wash the jars out with soap and water, air dry them and make sure there is no water inside.
  2. Cut the straws about 1/2 inch.
  3. You can store them in the jar itself.
  4. Cut a 2-foot thin string to use as another activity: Tying the straw pieces onto the string. You can tie a knot on the end of the string so they stay on.
  5.  You can also use tongs and have your child pick up the straws to try to put into the holes (takes a little more skill).
  6. ENJOY and BE HAPPY! =)
